Bulldog Grooming Essentials:

Q-Tips

Just like humans, Bulldogs get earwax buildup and eyeball crust. These bad boys are also used to clean in between facial wrinkles, and apply any creams or ointments in between the wrinkles as well.

Baby Powder (or Cornstarch Powder)

Many of the skin issues that plague Bulldogs are caused by moisture on the skin. After a bath, get your bully as dry as possible and then wait about 20 minutes. We apply a thin coat to his underside (especially the skin on his armpits and the hind leg area), and then we’ll put some in his rolls to help keep them dry. You can also use the cornstarch powder as a dry shampoo, to soak up oil and dirt from their coat! Just sprinkle and brush through!

Baby wipes

These are going to be your BFFs. Seriously. Your bully should not be getting bathed excessively, but what about in between baths? Baby wipes. Actually, we wipe Winnie down after just about all of our walks! We wipe down his coat, all his paws, and his rolls (since he’s always drooling and messily chewing up sticks). Start a routine with your dog from the time they are very young, so that they’ll be used to you grooming them all the time. Grooming a bulldog is an everyday thing, your life will be much easier if you get them used to the constant brushing and digging into their rolls.

Oatmeal Shampoo (not pictured!)

Oatmeal is known to soothe skin (even for humans), again, with the massive amounts of skin issues they get, keep a bottle around.

De-Shedding Shampoo and Conditioner

Notorious shedders… too bad no one told me this before we got Winston! This shampoo we have smells great, it does seem to help with his shedding, but not a tremendous amount.

Deodorizing Spray

Ever smelled a sweaty dog? Yeah, it’s gross. We use this spray every once in a while when Winston isn’t quite ready for a bath, and baby wipes just aren’t cutting it. You just spray down the coat (we like to brush it in with our rubber brush) and then dry him off. Voilà! Less offensive smelling bully.

Microfiber towels

These are great during bath time to help get your pup super dry more quickly! We have three or four for bath time, just so we can get Winston super dry!

Cotton Towels

After we use the microfiber, we move on to a good old cotton towel (you can even use old cotton tshirts!), this helps soak up the remaining water on his fur. The reason we use both is because, the cotton towels really get soaked and after a while, we were trying to dry our dog with damp towels… it was counterproductive to say the least!

Blow Dryer

This is new for Winston, but he’s getting used to it. After a bath, getting him dry is priority number one. When he was a bit younger, he used to make it so difficult to dry him off. So much so, that we’d let him walk around damp and air dry the rest of the way— we learned our lesson when he started developing hot spots as a result. No matter how much they put up a fight, get them completely dry.

Rubber Brush

These brushes are fabulous because the rubber bristles massage your dog as he’s getting brushed (Winston will let you go all day, he loves it). Secondly, the rubber creates a “static cling” of sorts that will trap the loose hair from their coat in between the bristles. Shedding is a huge issue in our household (completely common for Bullies), so this just one way we help to combat that. If you can, brush them a little bit everyday.

Furminator Brush (or similar)

Heaven sent. These brushes pick up where other brushes leave off. They almost resemble human hair clippers, but they’re not motorized. I’d call it more of a comb than a brush to be honest, and what it does is, it gets down into their coat to pull up any fur that is just waiting to wreak havoc on your life. You will pull up clumps of hair at a time and while you stare bewildered at the sheer amount of fur that is coming off your dog, you’ll be equally as happy that it’s not on your furniture or carpet instead.

Nail Clippers

Self-explanatory!

A few of these items you’re going to want to buy in bulk, and you can get creative with storage, but we just keep it all in a nice fabric covered box we got from Ikea.

Be sure to email us if there are any questions, or if there’s anything you use for your bully that we didn’t cover!
